REGION: PIEDMONT, ITALY – Piedmont is one of Italy’s most famed and beautiful wine regions. Situated at the base of the Alps, Piemonte in Italian means “at the foot of the mountains”. Piedmont has a cool continental climate with a hot growing season and severe winters. Vineyards grow along steep hillsides making this region as picturesque as it is productive.

WINE: Known for its higher acidity and lower tannins, Barbera is a very approachable wine. The LE15 Barbera is medium bodied with a sour cherry nose and a bit of earthiness. Bright, red fruit flavours of cherry and cranberry, with a hint of spice, tie it all together. Fresh acidity and smooth silky tannins make this a wine that can easily be enjoyed with or without food.

REGION: VENETO, ITALY – Located just North of Venice, The Veneto stretches across most of the northern reaches of the Adriatic Sea. The Veneto is known to experience hot summers and cool winters, and thanks to its proximity to the sea, less extreme weather than other Northeastern regions. Visitors to The Veneto area have more than just wine to drink, with the picturesque city of Venice absorbing the majority of the region’s tourism.

WINE: This unofficial “super venetian” white is a blend of the vibrancy of Pinot Grigio with fresh citrus and pear complemented by the honeyed and ripe pineapple notes of Verduzzo. The zesty freshness and acidity is balanced by rounded tropical fruit flavours and a bit of nuttiness leading to a crisp, clean finish. This is a Pinot Grigio with a bit of pop.

REGION: PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA – Located along California’s famed Central Coast, between the busy cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco you’ll find Paso Robles Wine Country. Paso experiences a long growing season of warm days and cool nights which makes for vibrantly ripened grapes and beautiful wines. In addition to the abundance of vineyards, the region is also known for its mineral rich hot springs.

WINE: Like a true mosaic, the varietals in this wine each contribute their individual personality to create a harmonious blend. Merlot and Zinfandel bring round fruit notes while Petit Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon provide structure and complexity. Mosaic Red has aromas of red fruit with an undertone of smoke and spice. Flavours of juicy blackberry, raspberry, spice and smooth tannins give way to a lingering finish.

REGION: MURRAY DARLING, AUSTRALIA – The Murray Darling is a vast region that sees the meeting of Australia’s two rivers, The Murray and The Darling near the city of Mildura. One of the most significant grape growing regions in Australia, the Murray Darling is over 350 kilometres (220 miles) wide and produces about 20% of Australia’s crush. The combination of heat, irrigation and fertile soil produces grapes which create soft, generously flavoured wines.

WINE: The trio of grapes that make up this wine are as distinctive as the blend itself. The wonderfully floral Gewürztraminer headlines as Verdelho’s tropical fruit characteristics play off of Muscat’s infamous grapey flavour. The resulting wine has a perfumed nose with vibrant flavours of pear, grapefruit, lime and mineral and an off-dry finish which makes this wine refreshingly fun to drink.

Located in Northeast Italy, just North of Venice, the Veneto stretches across most of the northern reaches of the Adriatic Sea. The Veneto is known to experience hot summers and cool winters, and thanks to its proximity to the sea, less extreme weather than other Northeastern regions. Silty, sandy soil prevails throughout the Veneto, with influences of clay and calcareous debris. The Veneto produces the most wine in volume in Northeast Italy.

THE WINE: Deep ruby colour with aromas of plum, smoke and spice. Rich flavours of dark fruit, chocolate, and cedar with lingering oak and a firm, long finish.

FOOD PAIRING: Forza pairs wonderfully with braised meats and rich risottos. Avoid foods with spicy heat which will be amplified by the high alcohol. Choose a dish that is of equal weight so that it is not overpowered by the fullness of the wine.

Triumph is a blend created especially for our consumers and is a celebration of the achievement which defines this Limited Edition program. Those who have experienced LE wines in the past will no doubt recognize some, if not all, of this year’s lineup as four of them are returning favourites from years past and some of the more popular varietals we have ever offered. January: Riverland Shiraz Viognier – Australia

REGION: This sun-kissed agricultural haven of South Australia boasts ripe examples of Shiraz and Viognier.  The cool waters of the Murray River acts as an irrigator for this declared reserve, which lies about 225 km north east of Adelaide. 

WINE: This Northern Rhône inspired blend takes the spicy, strong and tannic red grape Shiraz and softens its edge with the voluptuous white grape Viognier.  These wines are a beautiful marriage of black cherry, smoky plum, and black pepper from the Shiraz and hints of exotic jasmine flower, ripe apricot and juicy peach from the Viognier.

FOOD PAIRING: Enjoy this full bodied wine with grilled lamb stuffed with an apricot-mint stuffing or barbecued ribs coated with a sticky sauce.  If meat is not on the horizon, then try dishes such as grilled vegetable kebabs or portobello mushroom burgers.

REGION: Like scenes from a post card, the Mosel river winds its way at the bottom of a valley with 700 feet slopes draped in vineyards.  These steep slopes are treacherous even for the bravest of grape growers, where the Riesling grape is grown in abundance and is hailed as the great grape of Germany.   At 49 degrees latitude north, grapes are at their northernmost limit in terms of cultivation, but the warm sunny southern-facing slopes of this magnificent valley bring the Riesling to its full potential.

WINE: Riesling, with its pronounced acidity and ability to mask sweetness, is a grape that is happy in a cooler climate.  Its notable flavours of lemon, fresh apple and limestone will encapsulate you with its tangy acidic kick and the soft, gentle sweetness on the finish to tie it all together. 

FOOD PAIRING: This wine loves food, and many sommelier often reach for Riesling as their wild card.  With this German example, it would pair beautifully with schnitzel, white fish, or simply a good book.

February: Yakima Valley Triumph – Washington, USA

REGION: Overlooked by Mount Adams and moderated by the Yakima River, this valley is Washington’s coolest and oldest wine region.  Despite this honour, its macro climate allows Bordeaux’s (or “Meritage” in North America) three big star grapes to ripen well here.  The Yakima Valley is known for its agricultural abundance, and grapes are quickly becoming recognized as the power houses.

WINE: This blend of Bordeaux’s finest; Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot is proof that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.  These three friends all work so well together, and each contributes their individual strength to the wine.  Cabernet Sauvignon, or “King Cab”, adds the structure with his firm tannins and adds complexity with his aromas of cassis and black currant.  Cabernet Franc adds spice, with his peppery nose and red fruit undertones.  Merlot likes to round things out with his approachable plum and cherry characteristics and his softer, rounder body.   Together, they really do create a harmonious blend.

FOOD PAIRING: Think of dishes that warm your stomach.  Beef stroganoff in the winter, steak on the BBQ in the summer, or simply an aged cheddar for any time of year.

REGION: Northern California has some of the oldest vineyards on the west coast, with Spanish Missionaries planting back in the 18th century.  Today, the sunny rolling hills of the Lake County are moderated by the cool waters of Clear Lake, the oldest lake in North America.  With all of this history, the land is ideally suited for growing a variety of grapes.

WINE: The three grapes that make up this blend are distinct characters indeed.  Chardonnay is the popular and adaptable friend with apple and melon characteristics. Chenin Blanc reflects the soil well in its chalk and citrus aromatics, while its acidity anchors its structure down on the palate.  Finally, lady Muscat with her wildly perfumed nose and distinctive “grapey” flavour gives the blend a refreshingly fun and juicy addition. 

FOOD PAIRING: This wine is sip-worthy on its own, but will also pair well with fuller white meats such as roasted turkey or duck, and exotic flavours like curries and south-asian cuisine.

REGION: There’s a reason artists and lovers flock to this area of the world.  Yes its landscape is arguably amongst the most beautiful in the world, but more importantly the wine is legendary.  Located at the same degree of latitude as Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, this area of Italy sees warm, sunny summer days and nights where the Mediterranean provides a fresh cooling breeze.  Winemakers have been making wine here since the 8th century BC and have decided to dedicate roughly 80% of the vineyards to red grape varietals.

WINE: Super Tuscans are proof that winemakers are also rebels in their own right.   In the appellation of Chianti, where rules limited winemakers to certain grape varietals and practices in order to warrant official status, a few winemakers in the 1970s decided to break the rules and make wines that they decided were of superior quality, and disregarded the limitations.  Coined “Super Tuscan”, this full-bodied wine consists of Cabernet Sauvignon and the native Sangiovese, and has firm tannins, notes of cherry and currant and a long finish. 

FOOD PAIRING: Italy is the land of food and wine, so naturally these wines are a perfect match with food.  Try spaghetti bolognese, osso buco or a nice big wedge of asiago cheese.

REGION: Worcester Vineyards, South Africa. The sunny southern tip of Africa bathes Worcester vineyards, located north of Capetown, with immense sunshine hours and heat. Luckily the proximity of the Indian and Atlantic oceans not only brings much needed rain, but also the perfect Mediterranean climate to grow extremely ripe, rich grapes.

WINE: This classic blend showcases the depth and ripeness of these intense grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon’s classic character of blackberry, currants, black cherry and cedar blend seamlessly with the densely packed berry, chocolate, espresso and pepper characters of Shiraz, with a hint of earthiness. As it ages it will show ever more blackberry along with plum and a hint of tobacco leading to rich vanilla and toasty-smoky notes. Definitely a carnivore’s wine, this will complement grilled meat, roasts and game, but will also work extremely well with mushroom risotto.

January - South African Viognier Chenin Blanc Rousanne

REGION: Paarl, South Africa. Blessed by the same combination of hot sunshine and moderating ocean breezes that favour Worcester, the Paarl is encompassed by huge granite outcroppings that provide rain shadows to the vineyards and produce the sandy, mineral-laden soils. Low yields in these soils (less than 2 tons per acre) allow the vines to concentrate all of their growth on pristine, intense fruit.

WINE: The three grapes make a unique wine of elegance, power and delicacy: crisp, but honeyed, with aromas of apricot, orange blossoms, herbal tea and melons give way to a medium body and a long rich finish of floral notes. The depth and complexity of this white wine make it an excellent partner with richly flavoured foods: curries, Satay, and South-Asian dishes, along with creamy or buttery sauces and soups.

REGION: The Pacific Rim, encompassed by North and South America on one side and Australia on the other, has micro-climates that match those from all over the world, from the blazing sunshine to crisp mountain air, and soils ranging from sandy loam, stony red clay, nearly pure limestone and everything in between. The range and variety provide perfect terroir for almost any grape, and Winexpert has searched out the best for this blend, reaching all the way from one side of the Pacific to the other.

WINE: The four grapes showcase a host of brilliant flavours of bright fruit, excellent structure and a long finish. Viognier from Chile gives apricots, blossoms and stone fruit. Chenin Blanc from California gives a wonderful melony-honeyed aroma with hints of apple. Gewürztraminer from Washington contributes lychee, rose petals and floral notes, and Muscat from Australia’s Murray-Darling Valley gives wonderful grapey notes with dried fruit and hints of orange peel. Full-bodied yet supple, this wine has a range of fruit character and enough acidity to stand up to a wide range of foods, particularly spicy and savory dishes, including Thai cuisine, grilled fish, herbed roast chicken or salmon, but is delicious enough for sipping by itself on a golden afternoon on a patio or deck.

March – Oregon Pinot Noir

REGION: Willamette Valley, Oregon. Stretching from the Columbia River in the north to Eugene in the south, the Willamette Valley is nestled between the Oregon Coast Range in the West to the Cascade Mountains along the Pacific Coast. The climate is mild with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, allowing delicate, aromatic grapes to flourish.

WINE: Deep ruby with garnet highlights Oregon Pinot Noir as a poet rather than a linebacker, and its character is defined almost as much in the elisions between its delicate scents and ethereal aromas as it is from its rich fruit and finesse. Aromas of red cherry, bright raspberry and strawberry give way to the delicate scent of violets, and the tannins are lustrously smooth and full on the palate. The delicacy of this wine allows it to pair with subtle dishes, from the classic Boeuf Bourgignon to game, roast turkey, pan-seared salmon and rich fish such as cod.

April – Washington Cabernet Merlot

April - Washington Cabernet Merlot

 

REGION: Red Mountain, Washington. Red Mountain in Washington State is graced with southwest facing slopes for warmer temperatures and more sunlight hours than any other part of the Columbia Valley. The Yakima River moderates temperature, and the cool air flowing from the north prevents frost from forming, allowing grapes to safely hang for extended periods.

WINE: A darkly powerful wine with immediate notes of oak and blackcurrants on the nose come to mingle with peppery spice and cedar, supported by a fruit-driven palate of boysenberry, plum, redcurrant and black cherry. The finish is boldly tannic, with a mouth-filling grip of dense, brambly fruit. The tannins in this wine call for grilled meat and game: steak with blue cheese butter, saddle of venison, and especially roasted lamb with herbs.

New World Vineyard with Grape SkinsGrenache Shiraz Mourvèdre – Australia

GSM is a blend that was originally used in some wines from the Southern Rhône but has been gaining popularity in the New World wine regions. The three grapes work together to each deliver the unique components of the wine. Grenache offers up warmth and fruitiness, Shiraz contributes full-bodied black fruits, pepper and tannins while Mourvèdre contributes elegance, structure and acidity.

Tasting Notes: Crimson colour with aromas of ripe berries & subtle spice on the nose. On the palate, sweet plum & black fruit with a hint of tobacco.

Food Pairing: Enjoy this food friendly blend with hearty meat dishes, lamb or herbed pork tenderloin.

Oak: Heavy Body: Medium-Full Alcohol: 13%


New World Vineyard with Grape SkinsMerlot – Washington

Merlot is the most widely grown red wine grape in the state of Washington. Merlot grapes from Washington benefit from long days with many hours of sunshine contrasted with cool nights producing wines with New World fruitiness and Old World structure.

Tasting Notes: Ruby red colour with a nose of fruit and spice. Rich silky flavors of red berries, spice and plum with a smooth finish

Food Pairing: Pair this Merlot with roasted duck breast or beef burgundy.

New World Vineyard with Grape SkinsCabernet Sauvignon – Australia

Cabernet Sauvignon is grown all over the world, but Australia produces some of the most distinctive. Full bodied, dense and structured, this is classic Cabernet.

Tasting Notes: Sweet and spicy on the nose, this is a fruit forward wine with flavours of cherry, raspberry and black currant finishing with rich, velvety tannins

Food Pairing: try with a charred gruyere burger, a mushroom pizza with tomato sauce or some marinated rib eye steak.
